One small side trip

The Denali Highway runs east west from the Richardson to Parks (and even though Denali Park is on Parks highway, it wasn't named for that, but for some person named Parks).  We traveled the 20 paved miles from the east end and then returned.  The graveled 114 miles deterred us!

The Denali quickly climbed into tundra.  It crosses the Alaska range, but alas, the clouds lay low and rain pelted us off and on, but it was new country, and as always, beautiful.

As underground ice melts, kettle lakes are formed. There were many, many of these.  At one point I counted 31 in sight.

My favorite lake I think of as "Cotton Lake".  There are fourteen varieties of Alaska Cotton in the state.  Never did we see such a concentration as at this showy spot.
