Skagway to Juneau via Lynn Canal

We took a one day excursion to Juneau yesterday on the Fjord Express.  What a new perspective to see things from water level.  The Fjord that we were on, much wider than it looks from the maps, gave us an ever changing view of mountains.  (Why they gave the fjord such a prosaic name as Lynn Canal is sadness!)

We saw sea lions (though the captain said they should really be called sea bears, since they are much closer related to bears genetically); bald eagles, murrelets, a Jaeger, and other birds; and orca and humpback whales, harbor seals, and Dahl dolphins.  Good pictures were rare!  Bruce did better with a longer lens of this sea lion bull.
Captain Glenn owns and captains the catamaran were on yesterday.  His daughter was the crew.  They fed us the best smoked salmon chowder on the way back, but it's a secret recipe.  Shucks.

Their home is in Haines, though Glenn and his wife originally came from Kansas.  Tomorrow we board an Alaska Ferry to Haines and continue back up to the Alcan highway.  Haines in evening light.
